Anaerobic Digestion

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process—the controlled microbial decomposition of organic matter in the absence of oxygen—through which organic material is transformed into biogas, a combustible fuel consisting mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). It is a technologically simple process, with a low energy requirement, used to convert organic material from a wide range of waste streams into methane.

Anaerobic digestion works in much the same way as a cow’s stomach. Microorganisms break down biodegradable feedstock, producing biogas and a nutrient-rich, organic residual, often referred to as effluent or digestate. The methane produced during this process is stored in the top of the digester and piped out to CHP units, where it is used to power a reciprocating engine, thereby generating electricity. The heat from the CHP is captured and recycled back to provide heat required by the AD process. The digestate can be processed for use as a land-applicable fertilizer or topsoil.
